there have been more attacks reported. I Baron Chapelle have the arduous task of reporting to the king at court that my home, Gévaudan is still in need of support. Unfortunately I fear the worst.
Perhaps he will aid us once he hears the attackers fear no man! Then again my darling wife voiced a fear that lurks in the back of my mind still...
What if these beasts aren't beasts, but demons!
Still, better her say it and I counsel against such madness. I cannot be given over to flights of fancy. I would lose all standing and the Marquis may use that to undermine me and my efforts at court.
So far only a handful more neighbors count their children amongst the dead. I fear come Spring it will be worse. The hunters tell me wolf-kin are more brazen. The packs they have encountered appear more ferocious and only driven back by fire or a shot. Though with the price of shot these days not many hunters carry rifles and fewer still are good enough to hit anything with them.
This news does not bode well as only one farmer has a firearm that I know of and I cannot very well arm them. My coffers would run dry—not to mention training them to fire well and not waste shot! I haven't the time nor the budge. No...they better arm themselves while I am away.
